First race of the year plus coming off of a sickness.  My mindset was just to go and see how things went with no expectations, really.  I had no idea how I’d feel or what kind of pace I could run.  Drove to Provo and met Josse and Janae for a little warm up.  I was not all that excited about the course finding out they wanted us to run on sidewalks along with the park paths, but I was interested in finding out how I could do on a flat course and it was better than the first course they had planned out.  The race started and of course Josse and Janae were off and out of sight pretty quickly.  I started with Heather and we ran together for about a mile then she backed off a little and I just tried to hold tight and stay relaxed.  I was breathing pretty hard which worried me but I ran with a kid for a while and tried not to think about it.  The last part of the race was a slight up hill on the Provo River Trail and I was struggling.  We made the final turn(which I didn’t know was the final turn) and I looked at my watch to see it was showing we still had about .3 miles.  I was trying to figure out where we’d go since the finish line was in sight and there wasn’t really anywhere else we could go except a loop around the park that would be too long.  This made me slow my pace because I was fatigued and didn’t think I could make it another .3-.4 miles pushing it that much.  I figured out that there was no turn so I picked it up as much as I could to finish.  I crossed the finish line and met up with Janae and Josse, 1st and 2nd.  We were all thinking the course was waaay short so we asked the director about it.  He swore up and down that the course was accurate and there was another runner that said his phone said it was 3.1 miles so we took their word for it.  One thing I didn’t understand though is why they wouldn’t wheel the course for distance.  Josse asked if they had done this and they said no because it wasn’t a cross country race.  What?  I don’t get that.  Why would only cross country races be wheeled?  As far as I know all road races are wheeled for accuracy.  Oh well though, it was fun to be racing and it makes me excited for the year to come and the races I’m thinking about.  It wasn’t so bad running on the sidewalk for little bit I did run on it.  We all did about a 5 mile cool down together which was so much fun!

Running MilesSwimming YardsBike Miles

Pre-race meal- Had a banana with almond butter and about 20 oz of water before leaving and an egg with a little water about 45 min before the race started. Had half a 5 hr energy right before starting.

The race started right on time and so did the rain.  A drizzle was going about 10 minutes before the start and it steadily increased to a full on rain as the race started.  The wind had died down but it wasn't completely gone.  The rain didn't last long and having an overcast sky was actually beneficial. I forgot my watch so I was running by feel for this race.  I was being pretty conservative  because I'm so used to relying on my watch but I still felt like I was going at a pace that was pushing it hard enough.  Stayed steady up to the half way point and picked it just a little.  Took a gel at mile 8 and the other half of the 5 hr energy at mile 10.  I had felt pretty good the whole time so the plan was to run as hard as I could for the last 5k. During the last 5k I was feeling a little too good and kicked myself for not pushing harder throughout.  All I knew was that I was somewhere between the 1:40 pacer and the 1:50 pacer but other than that I really didn't know what pace I was running.  Any hoo, I finished strong and made a 4 minute improvement from a course that was similar from last fall.  I'm happy with that and glad to have an idea of where I'm at for the upcoming season.

Something to work on for sure.  I feel like I was in better shape last year at this time.  Still felt good to beat myself up.  It was windy, chilly, and I was feeling wussy, but I forced myself to do this on the track instead of the treadmill.  Glad I did!

First time doing this race and I wasn't expecting or prepared for all the uphill! It was fun though. Gorgeous course, starting up Snow Canyon and finishing in Ivins. The first mile was some kind of crazy downhill, then mile 2 and 3 was down with a few steep, short rollers mixed in. Mile 3 on was pretty much up and more up until the very end with a short downhill then flat. It was tough to push through this not nowing about all the ups but I made it and feel good about the effort.

This was a pretty tough workout but I feel like I did all right.  I feel a little run down like if I don't take care of myself it could turn into sickness so I need to take care of myself.  I did this on the East High track so after the 400's and 200's I ran up hill for about a half mile so I could get down hill for the whole mile.  This hill is way steep for the second half so I was struggling between trying not to fall over and pushing it as hard as I could, which I think slowed me down.  I didn't feel like I could have pushed any harder though.  Cooled down with a run back up the hill and a few times around the track easy.

The plan 4x1 mile downhill miles w/ 3 min jogs. Ideally I would have started up emigration and ran down, but that only works when you have someone to drop you at the top so I ran up 4 miles and started the down. My legs didn't want to move fast when I started the repeats but I did what I could. Jogged up 2 min and down 1 between miles. CD

I wanted to see what the course was like so I Ran 10 miles on the SLC half course. Ran the first 6 easy then did a 4 mile tempo. 7:25, 7:37(hill), 7:26, 7:25. Then ran back to the start easy with a few good hills. I was scared to do the tempo and didn't think I'd be able to run as fast as I did so I'm happy with it. Legs felt good but still tired at the end.

Oh man this race was tough for me. Went in confident and excited to see what I could do. Josse decided to pace me the whole way which saved me. I could tell pretty early that my legs were gonna be tired and by mile 8 I was ready to walk the rest of the way. Jos kept me going even through my head battle and I finished pretty close to my goal. Ithere were times where my breathing felt pretty out of control and when I took my gel it made my breathing go way out of control. Maybe this just comes with pushing yourself harder but it was a new experience to breath hard for most of the race. With all the twists and turns my watch clocked 13.2+ so if I would have run the tangents better I think I would have been under 1:38. Good mental test for me today.

Ran the UVM half course with Amber, Rachelle and Julia. I wasn't sure how'd I'd feel today based on how tired I've been on most of my runs lately. This was my last long run before my taper so I needed it to go well. I was pleasently suprised to feel really good. Amber and I did a tempo from mile 8 through 10. 6:50, 6:56, 6:56(6:54 ap). I felt good! The last mile was hard but doable. Makes me happy.

My mantra for the day: Success is in the effort not the outcome.

My initial goal going into this race was to run a time of 1:30:00. When I'm honest with myself about it, I know I was not trained well enough to run that time so it was hard being confident going into it. This made things very hard from the start. I could tell I wasn't in it from the start and I could feel myself kind of giving up before the race even started. My plan from the starting line was to take the first couple miles easy and see how the legs felt. If I felt good I thought a 1:35 was realistic, if I didn't I had no clue what would play out. The gun went off and I started out with Amber and Jen going their pace which was right behind the 1:35 pacer. I figured if my legs felt good I would make my way up to the 1:35 pacers and try to hang on with them. My legs never felt good. Never felt fresh. This was very discouraging especially since I took such a long taper. From mile one I could tell this was going to be a long race. There was a headwind that is not only hard to push against but it can defeat you mentally. By mile 8 I wanted to drop out or at least just stop and walk. My legs felt dead and I was just done. I made myself keep running and it was hard to keep up the pace I was going. I needed to prove to myself that I could push through the disappointment though. Miles 5-9 were the hardest. With about 4 miles to go my legs magically started feeling like they had some strength behind them so I tried to push myself to the end. It came just in time. It allowed for a mental boost as well and I needed it big time. It still wasn't enough though. I wasn't anywhere near the 6:50 average pace I would have needed for a 1:30 and still off of a 1:35 pace. But I never gave up. I wanted to and I didn't. That's what I'm proud of today. I pushed as hard as I could. I ran an effort I am proud of.

you didn't give up -- that is absolutely the most important thing here. it was a tough day for a lot of people yesterday. good job pushing past the thoughts of wanting to give in and giving your best effort for the day. that's a win.

Great job, Ericka! Usually when someone says they are about to give up, you see their splits start to slow down. Yours never did.

I invite you and allie to come to church with me next week.

I am so sorry it wasn't your day Ericka.:( I am proud of you for gutting it out pushing through the hard place. I know what you are capable of - I have seen you do it in training. Please use this frustration as fuel moving forward and don't let this race make you doubt yourself. I sure had fun training with you for this race and look forward to the rest of your year. You have made leaps and bounds in your training and once you shake this off you will continue to progress and improve.

Running MilesSwimming YardsBike Miles

Another race in the books. I had so much fun on this one! I've been pretty focused on running the past year and a half so it was really nice to mix it up and throw a triathlon into the mix. I've been doing a lot of my training with Ben and we decided to camp at the reservoir the night before. Best decision ever! It was so nice to wake up and not be rushed. It didn't even seem like we were racing until about 20 minutes to race time. When the wet suit went on though I felt claustrophobic and the nerves turned on. I knew I could be competitive if I held it together and I really wanted to do well. I was confident with my training and I was feeling pretty fresh so I tried to stay positive and focus.

Nutrition-  Egg and milk a couple hours before race time. pb/almond butter mix half sandwich and half a banana about 30 min before race time. I felt too full to start. 5 hr energy right before. Gel w/ caffeine before run.

Swim- 14:48
I'm really happy with the swim. Wearing the wet suit is a trade off. It makes getting into the water really easy and makes you more buoyant but it's a bugger to get off. Felt good about he effort I gave. The water was really calm and I only had a few guys try to swim over me. Getting out of the water was a bit more disorienting than I would have liked, but managed to make it up the never ending hill to the transition area.

T1- 2:51. I need to work on that time!

Bike- 37:51/19.02 mph average My legs took a little while to feel good. The plan? Go as hard as I could. I was breathing like I was working hard and I was. It worried me but I was willing to take the risk of blowing up. Maybe I wouldn't. The course was a pretty fast out and back. I was hoping for at least 20 mph average but I'm happy with 19 mph average.

T2- 1:15. Not too bad.

Run- 23:56/7:43 average pace This was a hurt fest.
The only real though I could process was "this is hard". I was aware of people looking over as I passed like I was a crazy person running after them. That was fun... I could feel the bike in my lungs. My breathing was off from the start and I never got it under control. I battled side aches for the first half. Guess I red lined it too much and didn't leave enough for after the bike but I survived it. Barely. I was passing people the entire way which is mostly what kept me going. I would pass people and they'd look over like I was a heaving fool. I almost gave in once and walked but I pushed through. The most frustrating part was that my legs felt really good. Fatigued but good. My breathing just wouldn't let me go faster.  This was the longest 3.1 miles I've run in a long time and it definitely made me respect the art of triathlon. It's a balancing act that I'm eager to get better at.

Pushing past what you think you are capable of is the most addicting and invigorating feeling I've ever experienced. My goal was to make top 10 so mission accomplished. My brain has already forgotten how painful it was and I'm jones'in for the next adventure. Thank you to Ben, Josse, Mom and everyone for being a huge support. I couldn't do any of it without the support I receive from friends and family. And to the kid that told me I can do a running dismount, I hear ya. I'll learn that.
