Ran this with Karina.  Not really in the best of shape.  I don't know why, but I always let her finish like 2 seconds ahead of me when she struggles to keep up with me the whole race.  I should stop doing this :0)  I guess she has more of a competitive spirit.

Running MilesSwimming YardsBike Miles

I wanted to do a 5K to see where I was so I could start working towards a faster 5K at the end of the summer.  This race being free made it perfect.  Started out with Josse and Mary on a little warm up then we ran into Melody before the start.  Good times.

I have just been trying to add milage every week for the last few months so I had no clue what I was going to be able to do.  Most of my runs are pretty comfortable and slow.  My legs felt really good, like they could have gone faster, but my lungs were burning.  Felt like it was a decent effort.  I had a bit of a runners cough afterwards so I was pleased.

Rode up to the Alpine Loop summit.  The first 2 miles of the climb had me worried that I wouldn't be able to make it to the top, but once I got past those I was golden.  I ended up loving it! Max speed was 42 mph on the way down so there was some decent climbing grade there.

Things I learned on my ride today:

I love my new Castelli shorts. Definitely my new favorit cycling appearl brand

I need two water bottle cages

Eating food and taking gels are way harder to take while biking than running.  Dry throats don't equal easy take down.

I need to learn how to farmers blow!

Thought I'd do and afternoon run in the sun since I need to get used to running in the heat.  I was listening to a podcast that I thought was from earlier this morning that had a weather forecast of mid 70's.  I thought it felt much warmer but I went with it.  I was so drained! Got home and checked the weather.  It was 90 degrees out! No wonder I didn't feel peppy.  Checked the podcast and it was from last week.  Head Trip!  At least I had an excuse for cutting it short 2 miles.

Mary and I met Josse, Rebecca and  Desiree at the track for some speed work.  Mary, Desiree and I did 400's, Josse and Rebecca did 800's.  My legs aren't very privy to the fast life, but they pulled out 2 more laps than they thought they could. 2 fast miles, 4.5 slow miles.

1:39, 1:47, 1:45, 1:43, 1:45, 1:46, 1:46, 1:47

Went out around the lake for a little 100 mile ride. 14.3 ap.  The headwind slowed me down a lot.  Wasn't the original plan and 50 miles of intense head wind had me wanting to stop several times. It was pretty frustrating but didn't want anyone to drive 80 miles to get me so I pretty much had to finish.  Plus my longest ride ever is 40 miles.  Don't know what I was thinking.  Once we turned off that northbound road it was tons better though.  If there is a headwind like that for the ride on the tri it's gonna suck!

Mary and I drove down to the lake.  We were going to go south around the hobbler course because of the smoke but it had cleared up so we decided we didn't want to drive out there.  The first 6 were between 9:07 and 9:25. Did a 2 mile tempo as I was told to do by Coach, 7:52, 7:43(Shoot, Bob, that's tuff) slow revocery mile and finished between 9:24 and 9:40 miles.  Legs are more sore today from my ab ripper X I did yesterday than from the 100 miler I did on Tuesday!

I can call it a true brick I guess.  1 mile swim felt great.  Wasn't really going for speed, mostly worked on form.  I think it was around 40 min.  Hit the TM.  First 2 miles I had a killer sideache.  I tried controlling it with breathing.  It helped but it lingered.  After 2 miles it went away and it was easy going.  Holy sweat!

Well, I'm happy with the time, but I was not very smart with this race.  I went out too fast and died at the end.  Woulda, coulda, shoulda.  I knew I was going too fast which is the dumb thing, but at the time it felt so easy.  My goal was to about an 8:00 AP, ended up with an 8:15 AP.  Live and learn.

I lapped watch at 10k because I wanted to see the time and then I remembered that my watch doesn't show the running time. Dumb watch. So my splits are a little messed up.

My goal was to do at least 48ish so I'm happy with my time.  So muggy out! I felt really good for the first 4 then I could feel the speed I wasn't used to.  There was a couple high school girls that I tried to hang with for awhile(7:16 for this mile).  They were going too fast for me so I died out and just tried to hold on for the last mile.

Warmed up and cooled down around Research Park.

Drove to Sugar House Park after the race and went up Emigration.  Saw one lonely marathoner coming down the canyon.  Took advantage of the water stop left out.  My legs were feeling it from the run.

First bike race in the books. Got up at six, ate and left for the race. Got there about an hour early, got the bike ready and warmed up/used the facilities/warmed up/used the facilities. Ate a banana and took a caffine gel about 10 minutes before the start. The caffeine made me a but jittery I think while waiting but it was helpful during. Race started at 8. I was nervous about starting in a pack of bikes cause I've never done it before but it was fine. At the start of the first real climb I was passed by a women that looked to be late 50's early 60's. She was a beast! The rest of the race went well. A few guys past me but I passed most of them back and passed a final guy at the sprint to the finish. Passed 2 girls toward the end. There was only 17 citizen women(about 105 men) total so it was pretty small but fun and I feel good about my effort. Last best time on this was 1:16:??. I learned a lot. Including there are several different ways to put your number on in a bike race so you need to make sure you know what way is being used :0) Good times.
Rode back down the canyon to the start and changed for my run. Rolling, decent sized hills but felt good. Came home, ate and went to the gym for a swim. Felt strong. Big race next week :0)

Started off laying in bed not being able to sleep. It popped into my head at 11:30 that I didn't have a timing chip and I couldn't stop thinking about it. It probably said in emails(I need to figure out why I never receive race emails) that we would get them in the morning and when I got up i looked on the website and it did say. All that worrying for nothing.

Woke up and had some coffee(it served its purpose nicely) and calories and made some pb and honey toast to eat on the way. Did all the pre race stuff and got set up. Sat around for awhile and listened to music. I feel like a Negative Nancy, but when the pre race meeting finally started about 15 min late they spent about 15 min giving away prizes and telling stories about competitors. Really? Just get to the point and let us get on with it! Especially when there is a late start! Just me ranting :0)

SWIM- They finally started the heats for the swim. I ate a banana at this point. I opted for a wetsuit for the first time and I liked it except I felt like I was being choked and it caused my breathing to be a little weird. Swim went smoothly, though, other than that, excepts goggles leaked a little. I had to flip once to my back to clear them. Kept my stroke even and consistent. Getting out of the water was good(no dizziness or weak legs) other than being slippery but they had people there to help you past the slime which was nice.

BIKE- First of all- WOW! THIS COURSE IS REALLY GORGEOUS!

Hopped on the bike and was off for the 56 miles. I forgot the sandwich i was going to eat at this point. Oops. But i did have a gel in tranistion. Almost right away my right calf started bothering me. It made me nervous and I started over compensating with my left leg. It slowed me down some. Took a gel about 45 min in. Got to the turn around and was dissapointed to not see any porta potties and flat open fields with nowhere to hide. I didn't care though. I had to go bad! It just kept coming too! But damn! It felt good. Ate a sandwich here. Drank about every 10 min. I could tell I was making my lungs really tired on the second half of the ride. I tried to breath as deep and slow as I could but it was difficult at times. My legs felt decent though.

RUN- Got back to the transition area and my brain was not working that well. Went out the wrong side on the run and it didn't even register that people were yelling at me for about 20 sec. Oops. I was in my head and just trying to not over think this run I still had to do. My lungs were so tired and my breathing not so good. I REALLY had to concentrate on taking deep steady breaths. Good thing my legs still felt ok. Got through the first half of the run and right on que I saw Josse there to help me through the second half. It was a happy day! And seeing cole and his happy face gave me a 2nd wind. I also had a little bird riding his bike next to me, making a posse, and I like it :0) She had water and Gatorade I had made up last night and some extra gels. I was going through gels very quickly in this second loop so I'm glad she had them! Not positive, but pretty sure I had a negative split run. I was so exhausted but sped up the last few miles and pushed it to the end. This was a very good learning experience and can say I will most likely do it again. I had a few people ask me if the ironman is next. I highly doubt that! Unless I become rich and have all the time in the world to train.

For the most part I was happy with the race set up. What a huge undertaking! But there were some things that bothered me. I thought there needed to be more porta potties along the course, the pre race meeting needed to be more efficient and bouyie set up should have started a lot earlier than it did, they needed mile markers on the run, some parts on the run were confusing and I think should have been manned, they should have offered more gels at aid stations.. To name a few.

One thing I really liked- I thought the police presence was spot on. They did a good job.

After thoughts- I have a lot to learn still about this sport and am excited to learn and race smarter.  I lost about 6 lbs I really didn't have to lose during this training but I still feel strong so I don't know how bad that was for me.

I agree with all your assessments. Except that maybe it was just me in my own head, but I didn't see any gu or cokes or anything at the aid stations except gatorade/heed and water! I really wish it would've been like a marathon and they'd have had food (candy, fruit, pretzels etc) at the run stations. Michelle- sculpted and nude.. Sounds about right but you forgot the unlimited amounts of ice cream. Funny how decency goes out the window in certain situations in life.

Burt- thanks for the honesty. It means a lot to me :0)

Josse- love it! And you!

Rachel- the gu and coke offerings were extremely random. I was offered once for each. Having real food at the aid stations would have been heaven! And yes, on time starts are kind of a big deal when your athletes are out in the dead heat and mugginess of the day.

Brent- I heard about last year and that's why I wanted to bring my own fluids. I can't even imagine how aweful the run would be without water at the aid stations. Hopefully they are learning more each year.

Rachelle & Melody- you are both amazing and I get inspired whenever I read your posts.

Stayed in Ogden with Josse. We got to the hotel and started setting all of our stuff set up for the morning and settled in. Just as we got everything ready we hear a new born start to wail in the next room. Josse was all 'oh nuh uh, I'm not listening to that all night' and switched rooms. Gathered up all our stuff and re-setup in our new room. Slept well! Ate a big breakfast and set out. Drank an expired EAS shake(by almost a year, thanks Macey's) on the bus ride up and half a banana w/ pb just before the start. Started right on time.

I knew what I wanted to do but I haven't been running a whole lot so I wasn't sure how it would go. My first goal was to run smart and not go out too fast. My second goal was to run around an 8:00/mile pace for around a 1:45:00 finish. I was two for two today! I stated out with a few friends and ran the first 2 with them then pulled away. I was feeling really comfortable and had to tell myself to stick with the plan and hold back. Started chatting with a girl and we ran together until around mile 11. She fell back at the water stop. I was still feeling really good and debating whether to pick it up more for the last two or keep consistent. I decided to keep it about the same. I was so nervous I would die like I did at The Hobbler. I didn't though. I'm happy with what I did. I met my goal and think that if I went any faster I would have fizzled at the end. Being strong feels good :0)

Decided last night to do this race but was still debating whether or not I wanted to spend the money this morning. Got ready and decided to drive over, still not sure. Decided I would probably regret not doing it. And I would have. I had a good time and it was a good last bike race for the year. I've ridden City Creek several times but I have never pushed it this hard. It's a trip feeling what the legs do when you're pushing your hardest uphill for that long. From my experience, bike races are kin of an estimation on the distance so I was really glad when it was exactly what they said it would be. I wouldn't have lasted much longer. It was short and fast. I was pretty jello-legged after. And that's the way it should be :0)

Santaquin Canyon. Man oh man this was a gorgeous ride. Starts out pretty mellow but then gets steeper and steeper. I had some good distractions though. I was in love with the fall colors, the stream and the sound of the running water, and all of the gorgeous surroundings. We really are blessed to live in such a beautiful place. I love running but one of my favorite things about biking is that you can cover more distance and see more things. I've discovered a new passion in biking and I'm sad the warm weather won't be around much longer.

Switch lunges, planks w/knee drives, squats, renegade rows, bicycle abs. Total 100 each of switch lunges, squats, renegade rows and bicycle abs. 200 knee drives. 600 high knees w/ rope. Course was a bit long. The course was right on last year and they moved the finish back a little this year. Not sure why they did that. Would have been a PR if the finish was in the same spot as last year. Oh well. It starts off with a little hill then it's mostly flat with a few gradual ups and downs. Felt pretty good. Ran out around the neighborhood.  Felt better today, still a little tired, but felt so good to get out for a run today! HIIT workout afterwards.  Focused on legs today.. felt good!

Nice work Ericka! Josse told me she talked you into the grandslam and I am very excited for you. :)

Thanks Rachelle. It didn't take much persuasion but maybe I should have given it more thought. Nah, it will be good times.

1 mile warm up, Bodyrock, 3 more miles.  Snowing like crazy so it was a gym day.

7 miles on the treadmill. Snowing hard again.  Wore wool sock and boots to the gym and forgot workout socks.  Tried going sockless but it started to get uncomfortable so I put on the wool socks that went up mid calf, rolled them down to make it a crew and man were those hot! and totally made it look like I had chicken legs.  Oh well, it helped me get through the last half of the run and it's not about the fashion, right? :0)

Imagined last night that I set my alarm for 4:45 to make it to spin and really thought that I did.  But then I woke up at 6:45 and I really didn't.  I'm pretty sure I subconsciously did it on purpose.  Made it to the gym and warmed up for a few minutes, did a HIIT workout and then went in the spin room for an hour all by my lonesome. Good times.

Went to the gym and watched the second half of run away train movie. Watching a movie and covering up the numbers is a decent combination for TM running. I thought for sure I had at least 2 miles left and then the dang machine started it's auto cool down.  I looked and I had gone further than I was planning so I finished off the last mile.  Probably like an 8:40 AP.

Wore my watch but didn't look at it at all. Went on the trail from home. Miles ended up getting progressively faster until the last one. I tried catching a guy for the last couple miles on the trail. Finally caught him at my turn off but it helped me keep my speed up.
